Curing with Care

For years, the words “cure” and “care” felt distant when it came to my complex fistula. I had resigned myself to a life of managing symptoms, the idea of a true cure seemed like a far-off dream. In the Western medical system, “care” had become synonymous with routine treatment, often lacking the genuine compassion, and understanding I so desperately needed.

That all changed when I arrived at Healing Hands Clinic in Pune, India, and had my initial consultation with Dr. Ashwin Porwal. Using the advanced 3D EndoAnal Scope, he thoroughly explained the complexities of my condition. But then he said something unexpected and that I dared to hope for: “You will be cured.” A wave of emotions washed over me, from disbelief to a flicker of long-lost hope.

My ten weeks in Pune and my time at Healing Hands Clinic opened my eyes to the true meaning of their motto “Curing with Care.” The care I received went far beyond the clinical approach I was accustomed to. The DLPL (Distal Laser Proximal Ligation) procedure, developed by Dr. Ashwin Porwal, was not just about fixing a problem. It was a holistic process that involved meticulous follow-ups, thorough cleanings, and a deep respect for the body’s innate ability to heal. This comprehensive approach took time, allowing for complete healing. I also learned that while a cure is the goal, each patient receives the utmost care regardless of the outcome.

What struck me most was the individualized approach. Healing Hands Clinic understands that each patient is unique, and therefore, their care plan must be equally tailored.

During my last follow-up appointment with Dr. Porwal he delivered the news I had longed to hear: all five of my fistula tracts were closed and healed. “You are cured of your fistula,” he declared.

Tears of joy streamed down my face, and the nurse, witnessing my emotion, asked why I was crying. “They’re happy tears,” I explained. After years of suffering, I was finally free – free from constant pain, the endless cycle of illness, the anxiety of needing a bathroom at a moment’s notice, and the burden of medication. I was finally fistula-free.

Looking back now, I understand that my time in India was the true beginning of my healing journey. Sharing my experience has highlighted how challenging the concept of “Curing with Care” can be to grasp. What I know firsthand is the profound impact of feeling truly seen and cared for. When you are given unwavering support, space, and time, your body feels safe, and its capacity to heal intensifies.

My journey to India was transformative in countless ways. It was never solely about the procedure; it was a profound healing experience that touched every aspect of my life.

Like many others who have lived with a fistula for an extended period, I had lost faith in the traditional medical system. In many ways, the system feels broken, urging us to seek alternatives and trust our inner guidance in the pursuit of true healing.

Recently, I came across a post by Dr. Snehal Porwal, Co-founder of Healing Hands Clinic, which beautifully articulates the philosophy behind their motto: “Curing with Care.”

“Way back in 2011, me and Dr Ashwin Porwal chose ‘Curing with Care’ as the tagline of Healing Hands Clinic. We never changed it, never even considered modifying it. Here’s my perception of it.

As medical professionals if we lack ‘care’ in our work, we’re not really CURING, we’re just CORRECTING a medical condition. However, adding the important element of CARE to our practice is when we actually CURE the patient. Agree? So, if you’re privileged to have the opportunity of helping people in their vulnerable time, DO IT WITH GENUINE CARE!! Also, you might not always be able to cure, (although as doctors that’s our ultimate aim) but you will have at least given CARE.”
